Budha Graha: How Hindu Astronomy Handled Mercury, Its Hardest Planet

Mercury hides in twilight and never strays far from the Sun, and Copernicus is said to have died without seeing it. The Surya Siddhanta carries a working model of its motion whose integers land within a minute of the modern period.

Why Oppenheimer Quoted the Bhagavad Gita When the First Atomic Bomb Exploded

At the first nuclear detonation in history, the man who built the bomb reached for a Hindu scripture. That choice was two decades in the making, and the tradition he reached for had already thought through the ethics of an ultimate weapon.

Big Bang Theory in Hinduism: The Universe Began the Way the Texts Said

Modern cosmology says the universe came from a single compact origin, that time began with it, and that the state before it defeats description. Hindu texts said all three, at the right scale, thousands of years earlier.

The Speed of Light in the Rigveda: Known in India Centuries Before Europe

Sayana's commentary on the Rigveda records a speed for the sun's light: 2,202 yojanas in half a nimesha. Under the standard yojana that is 185,794 miles per second, a quarter of one percent from the true value, written down while Europe still taught that light takes no time at all.

Why the Hindu Calendar Is So Accurate

The Surya Siddhanta's value for the length of a lunar month is wrong by less than a tenth of a second. It was written without a telescope, and the reason it is that good is not the reason most people assume.

Dashavatara and Evolution: How the 10 Avatars Track Darwin

The ten avataras open with a fish in water and arrive at the human being by way of a tortoise, a boar and a form that is half animal. That order was fixed in India centuries before anyone in Europe drew a tree of life.

Age of the Universe in Hinduism: The Closest Ancient Estimate

Every other cosmology of the ancient world counted the universe in thousands of years. The Puranas counted in billions, and came within a factor of three of the figure astronomy eventually measured.

The One Question Modern Science Has Not Framed, and the Upanishads Structured Two Thousand Years Ago

Modern neuroscience can say which brain activity accompanies seeing red. It cannot say why there is any seeing at all. The Mandukya Upanishad starts from the other end, examining awareness across waking, dreaming and dreamless sleep. This is an honest account of where the two traditions touch, what the mainstream position actually says at full strength, and a named list of what none of this proves.

The Delhi Iron Pillar Does Rust. The Real Explanation Is Better Than the Myth.

The pillar's buried section carries up to fifteen millimetres of rust, with cavities and pits, and the exposed shaft has a thin film of its own. R. Balasubramaniam published the mechanism in Corrosion Science in 2000: about a quarter of one per cent phosphorus, and a crystalline phosphate layer that alternate wetting and drying builds against the metal. What the Gupta smiths achieved was a process, not a secret ingredient, and the same tradition produced wootz steel and the zinc distillation furnaces at Zawar.

How Do You Learn Surgery When You Are Not Allowed to Cut a Body?

Incision on gourds. Drainage on a wax-coated plank. Puncture on a lotus stalk. Bandaging on a linen doll. And for anatomy, a corpse softened in water for seven days and taken apart with a brush, never a knife. The Sushruta Samhita is the oldest surviving answer to how a surgeon acquires the hand before touching a patient.

The Paper Trail: How Indian Numerals Came to Be Called Arabic

The digits we use are Indian, and the medieval writers who carried them west said so openly, in their book titles and their prologues. Severus Sebokht in 662, al-Khwarizmi around 825, the Codex Vigilanus in 976 and Fibonacci in 1202 each named India. Following that paper trail explains where the words algorithm, cipher and zero came from, disposes of the myth that medieval Europe feared zero as diabolical, and shows the credit went missing not in Baghdad or Bugia but in modern European textbooks.

Brahmagupta Got Division by Zero Wrong. The Tradition Argued About It for Five Hundred Years.

Brahmagupta's Brahmasphutasiddhanta is the first surviving book to give arithmetic rules for zero, and one of those rules is simply wrong. Mahavira gave a different wrong answer two centuries later. Bhaskara II named the result khahara, reached for an image of Vishnu to describe it, and made a fresh mistake of his own in the same passage. Modern mathematics still refuses to answer the question all three tried to settle.
